Blog #8 For your week 8 blog, I want you to look into social networking sites and the implications of their use. Specifically, I want you to enlighten yourself to their privacy (or lack of) policies. Do some digging in Facebook’s policies and see if there is something that catches your attention, surprises you, shocks you or, worse, horrifies you :-). Copy the phrase/sentence/concept that caught your eye and write a reflection on: HOW you reacted, WHY you reacted the way you did and WHAT you think the implications of this policy are.

I honestly didn’t see anything on Facebook’s Privacy policies that shocked me.  They are really good policies and something I’d expect. For example, if someone on your friend list wants to see your recent status or post, they can only see it if they are allowed to by you.  You have  the power to make so either everyone, friends only or specifically certain friends can or cannot see what you post.  It all up to you as how you set it up.  As far as how I reacted, well it was what I expected to find that nothing shocking or anything is going on that if something I don’t want happens, its all because I didn’t set it so that it wouldn’t happen.  As far as why i reacted the way I did was because I didn’t see anything shocking to me.  It all looked like I would expect it too.  As far as implications are concerned I think its truly so that facebook users have a pleasant experience and not be bothered by ads or worry about others seeing what they want to be private.

Blog #7 For your week 7 blog, please do a quick search on the web and find an online EDUCATIONAL game. Post the link to your game in your blog and take your best shot at analyzing why this game may prove useful in the classroom. Don’t just say: “because it is fun,” rather, give some pedagogical (you can read and refer to Gee’s principles if you like–see this week’s “at home” folder for a link to this article) or ODE standard-related reason for using the game. You may also consider giving a brief summary of what the game does in order for your readers to understand the post.

I found two games actually.  The first one called Dress Up Math is more suited for girls because it allows them to dress up a digital doll like girls do all the time with barbies and such but in this game you have to choose the top, bottom and shoes that each have a money value to them and you must make your complete outfit equal the goal cost.  When you do you move to the next level.  That game helps girls add prices up and by doing that it really helps them learn how to add numbers and get the right amount.  Very cool I think if it does that.  The link for Dress Up Math is http://www.primarygames.com/math/dressupmath/index.htm

The other game I found called Factor Feeder is probably more for boys (or anyone who likes Pac-Man)  because this game is like Pac-Man except you have a green monster guy who you move with your arrow keys over spaces with numbers.  But when you go over a number you have to make sure its a factor of the number it says before you start so if your number is 18, the only numbers you can move your green monster over are 1, 2, 3, 6 and 9.  Of course you can move back over to a black space (a space that you already got a factor of) if you can’t go forward and feel trapped.  This game is great because it teaches kids how to learn factors of numbers and if the more they play the more they learn and so the better they will do on the game.  The link for Factor Feeder is http://www.primarygames.com/math/factorfeeder/index.htm

 

Blog #6 please take a few minutes to reflect on your experience as either a teacher or student in the first (and/or second) lesson plan presentation. Did it make your reflect on your own future teaching? Technology tools in the classroom? Any other thoughts from the experience?

My group hasn’t done the teaching presentation but looking back when I was in school, I was never a problem child or anything but I do have a bigger understanding and respect for all the hard work teachers go through in making the presentations and other stuff like grading papers and getting the lesson through to all the students.

As a teacher I know I will have to work hard at doing just that but I believe that if I put my mind to it and give it all I’ve got and use different creative ways, I will be able to do it.

 

Blog #5 Read 3 article reviews and write a blog about what you thought of one of them

I read the one from Brooke, Kaylee and Ashley and all were about really awesome articles but I couldn’t decide which I liked better between Brooke’s and Kaylee’s because Brooke’s was about how in South Africa students were getting Laptops to replace desktops with wires and so they could move about more and understand as well as view other areas while having a computer still and Kaylee’s was cool because it spoke about how students in bad or rough areas who don’t have tutors nearby or tutors who are able or willing to drive over there can use technology to let them talk to each other basically like Skype and to therefor tutor from afar if you will.  I think both articles are very awesome well all three were but those 2 were the ones I really liked and I think both are great ideas for students in the classroom to be able to utilize and take advantage of.

 

Blog #4 We have spent four weeks practicing how to integrate technology into the classroom. The importance of learning these skills is a given, but is the integration itself at all levels of education? How Young Is Too Young (the reading for week 4) addresses the issue of age limits—what do you think? Is there such a thing as being “too young” for technology? Does technology really interfere with young child socialization?

Yes and No.  I believe that it’s important for our society to have our kids learn technology at a young age so that as a society we become more knowledgeable as well as create newer and better technology and also because the kids themselves become very smart in the process.  But I feel as well that they should do a lot of exercise and be out doors away from technology a little so that they 1) are not out of shape, 2) sociable in person as oppose to only online, 3) get to enjoy being kids and playing with other kids which as I just said before, allows them to make friends and builds in person sociable skills.    So I guess my answer is its ok for them to learn at a age that may seem too young as long as they have an equal time with being outside.

And this is coming from someone who is always on line or playing video games because I don’t do much outside and if I had a little more growing up I might have been in better shape not that I wasn’t outside at all just not as much as I probably should have been.

 

Blog #3 Blogging is about writing to an audience. Do you feel like anyone is reading your blogs (aside from me!)? For this week I would like you to read at least FOUR other blog entries by fellow classmates and comment on them. Then, I would like you to write in your own blog a few insights about what you read: For example, did it feel good to read what other preservice teachers were writing? Was this medium helpful? How did you feel about posting the comments? Do you feel like this exchange gives you any insights into running blog exercises with your own students?

At this time, only 2 others besides me have done blog number 3 so I have only read the blogs of Meghan Willman and Amanda Williams.  Meghan like me and many others believes no one has time to make blogs let alone read them and thats what I’ve thought the whole time.  It was liberating to know it wasn’t just me who thought that way.  Amanda on the other hand thinks that its a great way to get to know someone a little bit and after I read that I thought she is right.

Besides this assignment, I still don’t think anyone will read my blog entries but I think its a great way to understand someone and I think if they do read them, it could be somewhat useful.

Blog #2 Constructivism What does it mean to me?

Constructivism to me sounds like a useful and strategic technique to help students learn material better than if they were to just read from a book.  This is because by being hands on and actually getting involved, they feel more connected to the work and get a better grasp on it.  If I were to fix a car or possibly build one and someone was there to help me and show me how to do it from step 1 til the last step, I would learn so much more about it and have a better idea how to do it more often than if I were to read in a book and study what parts go where and how to go about the steps because by being apart of it, I am able to understand better how to implement the steps.

As a student, some classes didn’t seem to care about constructivism much and those classes were harder and less fun but when I had classes that actually had us work on the material and not just read about it, I did better and enjoyed it.  Science is a perfect example because if I were to have only read from a book and study and nothing else for the class I may have done terribly but since in some of those courses relating to science like chemistry and biology being hands on helped understand how to do it more and understand what the results would be.  I have to say though I didn’t like hands on so much with biology since I don’t like cutting up dead animals but it still helped understand it more.

When I teach math, I will definitely try to incorporate constructivism into the material.  I will have students come up to the board like when I was in middle school and solve the problems shown on the board.  I will have about 5 equations using PEMDAS (Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction) and ask for 5 volunteers to come up, solve the problem and after tell the class how they went from the equation and step 1 all the way to the answer.  I will give out handouts on occasion that will help them remember better how to solve the equations by having each answer correlate to a letter of the alphabet so that when completed it will spell out a phrase to a joke or riddle or question of some kind to make it more fun or maybe each number correlates to a color to color in a picture of some kind.  Something to make it fun while learning and that way being hands on.
